“Death To All Posers” was the battle cry of seminal Bay Area Thrashers Exodus, a mantle that has being taken up by Zimmers Hole; a band of misfits and miscreants who have come together to create their third and possibly most focused album to date. From the back bone that makes Strapping Young Lad, Simon, Stroud and Hoglan have added the truly certifiable vocalist The Heathen to form what is a flagship band to carry flag for all true metal. As one would expect from the bands previous releases Zimmers Hole don’t taken themselves to seriously as the title track would suggest, poking more than just a little fun at the Motley Crue’s of this world; “glam rock can suck your cock” says it all really. Despite the bands care free loose swagger and satirical irony, don’t be fooled into thinking their music has the same easy come easy go attitude. “When You Were Shouting At The Devil….We Were In League With Satan” is a solid a piece of metal as you’ll find in 2008; as fierce as pit-bull chewing a wasp and twice as nasty. Hoglan needs no introductions, his work with Dark Angel, Death, SYL have made him one of the metal’s premiere drummers, and with the aid of immaculate production never has he sounded better. Oppressive and totally driving the songs head long at a million miles an hour and with the crushing guitars of Simon’s ‘The Hole’ have pulled out all the stops. The Heathen is perhaps Zimmers Hole trump card, capable of Jekyll and Hyde vocals within the same song ranging from Halford screams to Tardy roars. All of which sit in totally harmony with the music they overlay, as odd as it may seem. “We Rule This Fucking Land” and “Flight Of The Knight Bat” have a contemporary sound, largely due to the aforementioned production yet still have an underlying traditional metal feel. What stands “When You Were Shouting At The Devil….We Were In League With Satan” out from the pack is most certainly the diversity of genres it crosses, from hints of Death Metal to Thrash back to NWOBHM. All married into one unholy alliance of chest thumping, head banging, fully charged explosive metal mayhem. |
