To sustain a career for over two decades in any walk of life is an achievement to be applauded, let alone a career in such a fickle and volatile market as the music industry. This is however exactly what W.A.S.P, and more notably Blackie Lawless has done and not without a modicum of success along the way. Having professionally lived through more changes in the world of Metal than most of us have had hot dinners, W.A.S.P hold a prestigious position of having been there, seen it and have several t-shirts; and still lived to tell the tail. Hot on the trail of their latest critically acclaimed record, "Dominator", the bands definitive 'best of' album, "The Best Of The Beast", is released. A career encompassing double album which includes classic material in the shape of "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)", "I Wanna Be Somebody", "Blind In Texas" and "I Don't Need No Doctor" but to name a few. The question isn't so much the quality of the material, but rather the merit of the release itself. For fans of W.A.S.P, with the exception of the Elton John cover "Saturday Night Is Alright For Fighting", there is little to entice the diehard to part with his hard earned cash. For anyone looking to experience W.A.S.P for the first time, then they need look no further, as "The Best Of The Beast" will slate their thirst and then some. From the early 'cock rock' glam generation tunes to the latter day concept albums, "The Best Of The Beast" offers it all; nicely packaged and comes with Dom Lawson's exclusive biography, which makes for an interesting read for even the most casual of observer. The record like so many compilations albums suffers from a feeling of being a little disjointed, with some of the material being at odds with one another. With a twenty year gap between many of the songs this is always a likely outcome. That aside "The Best Of The Beast" is a romp through the fields of nostalgia, from the care free days of the mid 1980's to the more serious latter day Lawless with a conscience tunes; and a bloody enjoyable romp it is to. |
