Way back in time, well 1994 to be exact 'Stream From The Heavens' descended on the world like a ten ton slab of despair, angst and sadness. To an uninitiated world the sloth like riffing and morose undertones took Doom to an all new dimension. Subsequently pigeon-holed as 'Funeral Doom', 15 years ago Thergothron made the likes of early Cathedral look positively Prozac happy. Over the course of the albums lifetime 'Stream From The Heavens' has built a cult like following and is now considered as one of the very bedrocks on which the Funeral Doom genre is built. Myth and reality do however often differ quite radically and in the cold light of day what is deemed a 'classic' when subjected to a little scrutiny can be nothing more than an average release. Not in the case of 'Stream From The Heavens' I'm pleased to report. The various influences of prog, goth and ambient music not only gives 'Stream' it's unique sound but also went some way of ensuring a differentiation from those that would follow. Drawn heavily from the bands (also considered classic) 'Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth' demo the album retained the underground vibe that many had been drawn toward. In the context of releases of today 'Stream' has many impersonators but few masters and that alone pays testomy to the albums longevity and class. |
