| The best thing to come out of Hull since the Humber Bridge, Pitiful Reign launch a full on Thrash attack with their new album "Visual Violence". We spoke with voice box for the Yorkshire quintet Josh Callis-Smith about the new barn-storming record and what lies ahead for one of the UK's brightest new extreme bands. | ||
| Hey guys! Thanks for taking the time to do the interview. How is everything in the Pitiful Reign camp? | ||
| Everything going great! We totally stoked with how the albums going so where all Thrashing! | ||
| The bands new album ‘Visual Violence’ is out now. How do you describe it to the layman who has yet to come across Pitiful Reign? | ||
| Beer fuelled Thrash Mayhem! | ||
| Where you pleased with the end result? In hindsight is there anything you’d like to have done differently? | ||
![]() |
We’re totally made up with the end result, the sound, artwork, everything is exactly how we hoped it would be, if not better! I don’t think we’d have done anything differently. |
What was the approach to the writing of the record, who brought what to the table? Is the process a collective or individual one? |
We all have ideas, which we take to the table, we generally start with one or two riffs, jam them out and create a song from that. Everyone contributes and everyone writes which means we always have loads of ideas, so much so that we’ve already began writing for the second album! |
Produced by some of Thrash metal behemoths in the shape of Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, ex-Death, ex-Testament) and Juan Urteaga. How did Steve and Juan become involved in the project? |
We flew out to Italy too meet up with the label, they took us to a small pub and Steve walked in, that’s when we found out he and Juan would be working on the album, We where so stoked and it was awesome to meet him, so we spent the night getting pissed, we ended up drinking far too much raki that night! |
What do you feel Steve and Juan brought to the process that perhaps a home-grown producer might not have? |
Steve has one of the most awesome bass tones so we knew the bass on the album was going to sound shit hot! Juan has been working with some of our fav bands recently, Exodus, Testament, Laaz Rockit, Heathen, so we know that he would be able to capture our sound exactly how we wanted it. We wanted some one that would use our sound not distinctively put their sound on us like some producers do. |
| For any fan of Thrash metal will instantly recognise the signature art work of Ed Repka. Totally killer cover, how did you guys hook up with Ed? Did you have any input into the design in any way? | ||
We worked together to generate the idea, we already had a good concept driving the album so the ideas just flowed in, Nev’s brother came up with the first idea then we just flew it back and forth between Repka and ourselves. He was awesome to work with and produced some killer artwork. I still look at it and think “fuck! That’s awesome!” |
Prior to the release of D.I.V.E the band chose to replace the then guitarist Tom Britton with two new guitarists, Alan Pashby and Nev Britton. How do you feel the band have benefited from the twin guitar sound? |
| Having two guitars and a separate vocals has allowed the band to progress a lot, it’s allowed the guitarists to focus more on what their doing while giving me more freedom as a front man. The impact this has had on our live shows has been killer, it feel like there’s so much more energy on stage and allows me as a front to fully focus on the audience as apposed to my guitar at the same time. | ||
The band has a couple of shows inked in over the next couple of months, but any plans in the pipeline for a more expansive tour in support of the album? |
| Where currently working on booking shows, to tour this album, we really want to get back on the road; it’s by far the best part of everything! | ||
| How do you feel that even in this day and age that censorship still exists, as Youtube have banned your ‘Human Coleslaw’ video? | ||
Its all a bit bollocks really, I don’t see why it was banned, I’ve seen so much stuff on there that’s far worse, but still I suppose its an achievement in its own right, youtube sent me a message saying blah blah, your video contains violent graphic images, upload it again and we’ll cancel your account! Still myspace seem ok with it though, so if you haven’t seen it yet, head over to our myspace page and check it out! |
The band have an undoubted sense of humour about yourselves and look to always enjoy what you do, but are you at all concerned that you could be misconceived as a ‘joke’ / novelty band? |
Not at all, we like to have fun and enjoy ourselves, there’s a lot more to the lyrical concepts then first meets the eye, I mostly write my lyrics with double meanings, unless they are written purposely for the get off your arse and enjoy yourself feel “thrash boobs and zombies” my three favourite things! Most of our songs convey ideas about current British culture and society and how we view it! If you read the lyrics to Push To Prime, the read in too completely different ways, one way reads as if it about cutting grass, the other way reads as if its about how people feel they have to look, feel, act a certainly way in order to fit in to a society run by the media. |
Of all the Thrash bands we have interviewed I have intrigued to know their opinion as to the reason for the resurgence of the Trash movement over the last few years, what do you attribute to? How do you see the UK Thrash scene? |
The Thrash scene in the UK at the moment is awesome, there’s a lot of bands working very hard to push the scene, 4 years ago we were one of only a few thrash bands in the UK , we used to play with Evile and Headless Cross every other gig because there wasn’t many other Thrash bands to play with! But now it’s really kicked off there’s loads of killer bands creating some of the best thrash to come out of the UK yet! Check out Amok, Warpath, Gama Bomb, Damnas, Mutant all killer bands! |
| So what is next for the band? Any final words to the Pitiful Reign fans out there? | ||
There’s loads of stuff in the pipeline, but there’s still so much stuff we want to do! Aghhh the list is endless! Words to the fans! Just want to say a huge thanks for all the support, its really appreciated! Keep Thrashing! |
