Live albums over the years have by and large been resigned by most as either stop gap releases between studio albums, or a means to gain a quick buck from exploiting the long suffering fan. While a generalization, and an injustice to some, we all can name several examples where a more apt and appropriate description couldn't be found. The question is however which camp would Katatonia's "Live Consternation" fall into? For the die hard and casual fan alike "Live Consternation" offers both audio and visual value for money. As is often the case a live album is accompanied by the separate release of the live DVD, expecting fans to dig deep and fork out for both. No such money making exercise here, with both formats included in one lavish packaged release. From a musical perspective "Live Consternation" is by no means the definitive career encompassing release, with much of the material being taken from "Viva Emptiness" and their bands latest release "The Great Cold Distance". This is sure to be somewhat of a bugbear for some fans, particularly those who have followed the band since day one. If we are however to consider any live album in the 'best of live' bracket then Katatonia's decision to rely so heavily on the two aforementioned records was a wise one; as these two albums arguably represent their best material since the creation some sixteen years ago. Production quality is visually and audibly right on the money. The album does benefit from uninterrupted listening / viewing. Much of the bands power and appeal live is their obvious undoubted tight musicianship, but also their ability to draw the audience into their world, hold onto them and shake them until their teeth rattle. In a collection of such excellence it is all but difficult to pick out highlights, but if pushed, "The Great Cold Distance's" "Leaders" and "July" take some beating. "Live Consternation" is a certainty to be a fans favourite, but also a great first step for those yet to experience the majestic wonderment of Katatonia. A real case of satisfaction guaranteed. |
