| If sugar and spice. and all
things nice are what girls are made of; Grand Magus must comprise solely of
denim, leather and enough Heavy metal to forge a surplus supply of hammers for
Thor. "Wolf's Return" pays homage to all that was great about British Heavy
metal of the late 70's and early 80's; and excludes all that was forgettable
about the golden years of NWOBHM. With the release of "Wolf's Return", Grand Magus has dispelled the Doom metal tag that has attached itself to the group since the release of the bands self titled debut and it's equally impressive follow up, "Monument". All the elements that make Grand Magus the masters of Sweden's Metal scene are present and correct, and certainly in tip top order. With tracks like the album opener, "Kingslayer" and the title track, it's easy to see them making a solid contribution to the bands already impressive live show. The pocket rocket that is "Wolf's Return", packs an almighty punch in it's concise and focused direction and song writing. With the longest song clocking in at little over five minutes, any thoughts Doom fans may have had of long mournful songs, written while riding the waves of the sea of depression had best prepare themselves for a disappointment. As the Doom metal band wagon continues to build momentum, spawning some modern classics and it has to be said some not so classic albums; Grand Magus have chosen to produce a metal album with all the spirit of the genres nearest and dearest. The Norsk themed lyrics remain the one binding consistent theme album to album and "Wolf's Return" is no different. JB wallows in the imagery his lyrics evoke, but more so than ever before JB's vocal talents are displayed to their full capabilities, and with such songs as the aforementioned "Kingslayer" each song is treat to those of us who love the riff driven metal of old. "Wolf's Return" should be an essential part for all fans of Grand Magus, and for those who have yet to experience the power of Sweden's best export since the meatball, should ensure that this is item number one on your shopping list. |
