Not quite the full length release we had been promised, but quick to stamp out any feelings of disappointment the Swedish Death 'N' Rollers mark the sixth day of the sixth month of 2006 with "When In Sodom". This less than vogue format, the EP has served Entombed well over the years as a means of trialling new and varying styles. Who can forget the "Hollowman" EP, and the now legendary first airing of "Wolverine Blues", or "Out Of Hands" Kiss cover "Gods Of Thunder"? The release of the "Sodom" not only serves as a prelude to the release of the new "Serpent Saints" album, but is the first Entombed release not to feature founding member Uffe Cederlund. Opening and title track is reminiscent of the Entombed of old, heavy and full throttle Death Metal with no hint of the groove that we have become accustomed from Entombed's latter-day works. Alex's guitar tones are still trademark Entombed, guttural and as heavy, and there are no signs that the aggression of previous works diminishing as a consequence of Uffe's departure are evident on this offering. "Heresy" and "Thou Shalt Kill" are like a fine wine, enjoyable at anytime but only improve with age, on the second / third listen get better and better. LG, never the most brutal of vocalists plying his trade in this genre, does however still remain one of the most effective. Dare we mention Entombed's "Clandestine" offering as evidence to the importance of LG to the bands overall sound? "Heresy" provides the perfect platform to allow the band the ability to move away from the traditional and offer a more low paced affair, that is until the sonic explosion that signals the end of the song! It is perhaps however the final track, "Amen" that shows Entombed in their most experimental mood, a 180 degree change in style produces an eclectic yet compelling song, and proof that a change in direction does not necessarily spell disaster. If these are the tunes not to make the final cut of "Serpent Saints", the album should prove to be worth waiting for. |
