Old school Death Metal gore monsters Deranged are back like it is 1990 all over again. With a new record deal and album in hand Jules shot the shit with main man Rikard Wermen about what is new in the world of the Deranged.

Hi guys, how is everything in the Deranged camp?
Pretty good… You know, same old, same old…
The new album “The Redlight Murder Case” has just been released, what has been the reaction to the album thus far?
It might sound like a cliché but the response so far has been really great. Lots of really great reviews and word on the street is that it’s might our best CD ever so… Can’t complain.
A concept album from a Death Metal band is not something you often see. What gave you the idea to approach doing such a project?

I wouldn’t go as far and say that it’s a concept album. Concept albums sound so fucking pretentious. Ha ha ha… I just thought it would be a fun thing to base all of the lyrics and the song titles upon Giallo movies. You know, I have said it so many times before but we’re not the kind of band that will have like band meetings where we discuss in what musical direction we’ll take the band. We just play and if it sounds cool we’ll keep it. Simple as that.

How did you approach the writing of the album, and did it differ at all from your previous records?

As a matter of fact it. Earlier whenever we were working on new songs we would just be constantly writing new material under a certain period of time and only do that. This time around would we only be working on new songs once a week and the rest of time jam old songs or whatever. That was a good thing coz it gave one perspective and time to think about the stuff we had created. Whether it was something good or you know… Something we could keep.

The titles on the album appear to have a strong influence from the Italian Giallo movies genre. Is there any connection and are horror movies an influence on the band?

Oh yeah. I would say that pretty much everything around the band such as lyrics, songs titles or whatever is strongly influenced or even based on horror movies. I have been into the whole horror genre for years and probably just something I can relate to you know.

Often concept albums are seen as pauses in bands careers as they are often on a completely different plain to the rest of the bands music. How do you feel the “The Redlight Murder Case” fits in the discography of Deranged?

I think it suits fine. As a matter of fact, I would say that the Redlight… and Obscenities… CD’s are nowadays the only recordings that reflect how Deranged sound as a band. It’s not a big secret that I dislike our earlier recordings. And once again, I wouldn’t go as far and say that the Redlight… disc are a “concept album”.

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered in 14 days. Why so quickly and if able would you have wanted more time, I mean is the studio a place Deranged enjoy?

Nah, as usual we pretty much just went in and played and that was it. 14 days was pretty much the time we needed. I don’t know….. We are probably not the kind of band  that likes

to “overdo” things you know. I’m personally not that into the whole studio situation. I’m more a play live person. I don’t like to do things over and over again and to be honest, once I’m done with my drums, and that usually happen within the first 2 or 3 days there’s very little for me to do so…

The band have a number of festival appearances scheduled for 2008, but in addition to these can we expect Deranged to hit the road in support of the album?

Yeah, we’ll do like 8 or 9 festivals this summer. It’ll be cool all though I’m not a festival type of guy. A well packed club, capacity 300-400 is the thing for me. Besides the festival appearances, nothing planned but I hope we’ll be able to do a longer tour later this year.

The band have been around since the early nineties and have remained true to your Death Metal beliefs throughout your history, what is your take on the genre today and the bands in it?

The band within the what most people would label as “brutal death metal” are all quite good and music wise, stronger then in a lot of years. Lots of new bands popping up that are really great. Music wise, as mentioned I would say that it’s really cool but the media and the likes pretty much sucks.

“The Redlight Murder Case” is released through Regain Records, why return to Regain and what ended the relationship with Listenable Records?

I still consider Listenable to be a cool label you know. The thing is, at least if you ask me, that they wanted one thing and we another and it just didn’t worked out any longer. We left them and I pretty much just called Regain up and asked if they wanted to give it a try and the thing with Regain have so far worked out really well. They have their office like a 10 minutes walking distance from where I live and shit…

What’s next up for Dreanged?
As mentioned, we have a couple of festivals this summer… Except from that, just keep on doing what we’re doing but do it better.

Any final words to all the Deranged fans out there?

Death to posers.
